Founded in 1881 in a church basement as an educational refuge for African American women deprived of a formal education, Spelman has evolved into an esteemed institution of higher learning. Though taking up just 32 acres of the Atlanta University campus, Spelman's stamp on the educational map is vast. With a regarded alumni registry (Pearl Cleage, writer; Marian Wright Edelman, Children Defense Fund founder) and respectable accolades (one of US News & World Report's 100 best liberal arts schools) to its name, the fine HBCU of about 2,100 students continues to rest near the top of forward-thinking black women's collegiate wish list.
