Editorial Review for TULA – by Beth Bilderback
The History
TULA has become such an institution that it's hard to remember when founder Lil Friedlander first renovated the 48,000-square-foot manufacturing plant into studio space for herself and her friends. At the time, Bennett Street was just an anonymous industrial enclave.
The Scene
An excellent example of strength in numbers, TULA creates a momentum no single gallery could achieve on its own. Commercial galleries, including the artist-owned-and-operated Ariel, share space with artist studios. IMAGE Film and Video takes up a small auditorium at the back of the building.
When to Go
Stop by after an afternoon of antique shopping--there's ample parking--or attend one of TULA's excellent art openings on a Friday night.
