Editorial Review for Margaret Mitchell House & Museum – by Mike DiPrima and Jake Sussman

The Tour
Walk through Mitchell's apartment No. 1--the cramped one-bedroom space that she affectionately called "the Dump"--and you'll get a taste of her life and times. The tour begins with a look at Mitchell's newspaper columns from early in her career, continues with a walk-through of the apartment (her typewriter is on display) and continues with a photography exhibit and collection of Mitchell's personal letters. You'll learn about the house's history and hear great anecdotes from Mitchell's eclectic life.

The Museum

Only open to those touring the Margaret Mitchell House, the annex has set pieces and props from the movie, scripts, programs, film footage and, of course, Scarlett's blue dress. Many of the items came from Herb Bridges' famous collection of "Gone With the Wind" memorabilia, the world's largest. The recent addition of movie artifacts and the building's restoration--not to mention savvy tour guides--make this an interesting stop for fans.

My mother and I went to the Margaret Michell House & Museum over the weekend and were not very impressed. We tried to pay our admission with two twenty dollar bills and they didn't have change forced us to pay with a credit card. I would think that a tourist attraction would be equipped with plenty of change for cash paying tourist. The tour of the house was very plain. We went to tow palor rooms that only had pictures hanging up on the walls. We then went to apartment #1 which was nice and interesting, but it was way too small to have 20 people croweded into the living room. Being crowed into that room didn't allow you to see everything in the room. I felt that we were really rushed through the entire tour so that a wedding reception could take place.

Pros: Parking, Gift Shop

Cons: Crowded tour, Rushed through

I really knew nothing about Margaret Mitchell (other than the fact that she wrote 'Gone With The Wind') before I visited the House for the first time. After taking the tour and learning about Ms. Mitchell's family, her triumphs over adversity and her incredible acts of philanthropy, I became a huge fan. In fact, I even worked at the MMH for a while a couple of years ago. The tour is a really neat glimpse not only into an amazing life, but into the complex history of the city of Atlanta and complicated race an gender issues. Very much worth a trip.

Pros: fascinating, surprising

Cons: a bit expensive
