The Scene
It's as if the traffic on nearby Peachtree slowly wore away the edges of the casual Mediterranean influenced restaurant. The interior shows age with its worn blue carpet, scuffed wood floors and stained ceiling tiles. The large, well-trafficked and more vibrant outdoor patio sits a step removed from street noise when compared to its eclectic neighbors, Huey's and R. Thomas. The service at Shipfeifer is extremely laid-back, even during lunch rush.

The Food
The restaurant's neon orange sign advertises vegetarian fare, and the sampler platter has all of the best veggie dishes--falafel, hummus, tabbouleh, babba ghanoush, feta, pita, tzatziki and artichokes. The gyro comes stuffed with seasoned meat and dripping with either tzatziki or tahini. Neither of the two standards, the gyro or the falafel, wows the taste buds. For an added zing, order the restaurant's crispy curly fries with Shipfeifer's tangy feta dressing.

Shipfeifer's is a great place on Peachtree, and if you like gyro's then make sure to try theirs. Good price for the plate with fries, and try it with feta.

I've always heard fantastic reviews for this place. However, it would seem the place is now run by new management. No reason to come here if you wanna have a beer or have a smoke on the patio. No Liquer License and smoking outside is prohibited. As far as the food; it was ok. It was one of the better Gyros I have had here in the U.S. However, the meat was tough and cubed (it really should be shaved off in smaller bits) and there were loads of lettuce everywhere. The Zaziki and feta suace were good but the spanikopida was ove -fried and had gobs of grease dripping off of it. Saturday lunch crowd consisted of a total of 6 people in the restaraunt. Probably an ok place to grab a bite to eat- but not for a social lunch or dinner.

This restaurant was recommended to me by the late Honorable Mayor Maynard Jackson himself, may he rest in peace. We saw Mayor Jackson, who was a big jolly eater, in the parking lot. My friend was going on about what a great mayor he was, I said, "well I just wanna know what you had for lunch!" He laughed and said, "oh try the falafels, they're the best in town." From then on this became one of my favorite places for wraps, chicken wings, and of course falafel, and the carrot cake which is a well kept secret. Apparently there is a new owner and you can tell the difference. My falafels were really dry and crunchy and when my waitress asked to have them done over a loud argument ensued in the kitchen about how they were just like they're supposed to be. I went to tell them to forget it because I don't like people arguing over my food, and much to my surprise the owner was one of the people arguing that they were fine and that's how they're supposed to be. My waitress had to stick up for me, and they made them over but they were still inferior. Today I went and ordered a $7.95 Grecian Salad. It consisted of a big bowl of iceberg lettuce, 2 thin slices of green pepper, 2wedges of tomato, and 2 kalamata olives. We asked for a few more olives so they brought out 2 olives rolling around on a saucer, and we were told that the owner said that's all you get. I told the waiter to let her keep them because she might need them. Maybe she can put 'em back in the jar and sell 'em again. Better to raise the price of them salad and make it better than to be so stingy. People coming for the first time might think it's pretty good but old-timers will soon notice that it's going downhill fast due to the mean-spirited stinginess of the new management. This is a case where under new management is not a good thing. I'm sad that I won't be able to go there any more:-(
