The Scene
Owners Charlie and Nan Niyomkul have the magic restaurant touch--relocating their beloved Tamarind from 14th Street to Colony Square without a glitch. Since opening day, the intimate dining room--dressed in rich browns and accented with spice jars-has been packed with business lunchers, theatergoers and longtime fans following the scent of lemon grass, coriandar and chilies. A breezy patio offers additional space for dining and people-watching.
The Food
The setting may have changed, but the food is as fresh-tasting and as precise as ever. Crunchy fried shrimp wrapped in rice-paper skin is a simple yet oh-so-good starter. Roasted duck salad with chili peppers, onions, cashews, pineapple chunks and sliced apple encapsulates sweet, sour and salty in one bite. Pla-lad-prik, baked grouper with minced shrimp and a sauce kissed with anise, pleases the eye and the palate. Chewy fish cakes and the crispy roast duck in Panang curry sauce remain worthy of their cult following.

My boyfriend and I dined here yesterday, and we had the pleasure of being served by Santi. We shared the chicken satay, and while it was incredibly tender and delicious, we thought the four small sticks of chicken were kind of pricey at $7. I had the somtum-green papaya salad, and it was one of the best dishes I have ever eaten. My boyfriend had the gang-panang chicken, which was also wonderful, but we thought the portion was somewhat small for the price. Also, it did not come with rice, and a small bowl of it costs $3.

My husband & I went for lunch on Tuesday. I was hoping they would have lunch specials, but they didn't. We had Gang-Khew-Whan & Pad-Bai-Ho-Ra-Par. The Gang-Khew was really bad (it had a weird flavor). The Pad was ok but still not great enough to visit again..Go to Surin they have awesome thai food. We were going to go there but last minute opted for Tamarind..oh how I wish I went to Surin instead...

It was my first time eating at Tamarind seed; one of my friends recommends it, he said that it was good for business meeting. After reading all the review in magazines and all the recommendation from my friend, I decided to take my client for a lunch meeting there. Unfortunately it turned out to be a whole experience of embarassement!! I guess my hope is too high for that place. The only good thing about tamarind is only the décor. The service was ok and the food was too slow. But the most embarrassing is when we saw the host hold customer hand in front of the bar and left the other customers walk in. they were flirting and huging each other. I was ashamed for the owner because no one in the restaurant seemed really care about it. Being put in that possition, the only thing that I can do is to make an akward jokes about that. I do not recommend this place for your business meeting. You can take your money to a better place to get better food and service. It was a ripped off and the staffs are ill-manered and not proffesional.

Tamarind Seed validates parking in the Colony Square parking garage for 1 1/2 hours. You can self-park in the garage or use the valet, located in front of Shout restaurant on Peachtree Street.
What to Drink:
The restaurant's wine list ranges from the affordable Monkey Bay Sauvignon Blanc ($8 a glass, $30 a bottle) to the pricey BV Georges La Tour Cabernet Napa for $165. It also has several beers--including Singha--cold sakes and fruity specialty cocktails.
Know Before You Go:
If you plan on dining during peak dinner hours or the lunch rush, make a reservation to ensure you'll have a table. The restaurant does offer takeout, but if it's too busy, the staff may tell you they can't do it for you.
The Extras:
For a healthier option, opt for the brown rice. That way you can splurge on the lychee nut creme brulee for dessert.
Look Good:
Ask your server about the whole fried snapper with basil sauce. It's not on the menu, but if it's available, the kitchen will prepare it for you.
