Editorial Review for Cafe Intermezzo – by Aubrey Sabala
The Scene
This Buckhead mainstay, modeled after a Viennese coffeehouse, is always hopping. During the day, professionals linger over Irish coffee and sandwiches on the open-air patio, while at night, starry eyed couples cozy up in the candlelit rooms. Larger groups meet in the welcoming space for coffee and conversation. The personable waitstaff adds to the friendly vibe.
The Food
Decadent cakes and pastries--like espresso-soaked tiramisu, rich chocolate cheesecake and flaky berry tarts--star, but an eclectic menu of hearty Italian entrees and savory small plates is worth sampling. Appetizers are outstanding: Garlic shrimp, served in a light cream sauce, is bread-mopping good, while the smoked salmon plate and chicken quesadillas are filling enough for a meal. Extra-large entrees--mainly sandwiches and pastas--are hearty, so be prepared to take most of your meal home.

I guess I first became a fan of Cafe Intermezzo back in the early eighties, when a friend took me to Park Place. And having lived in Brookwood/S.Buckhead the last few years, I would only run in, and get one of those out of the world desserts to go, at the Peachtree location. But last week, a friend and myself decided to stop in for dinner. What a charming little cafe menu, and at very affordable prices. We shared an app. of Baked Baby Brie with almonds and served with a raisin-walnut bread and apple slices. Absolutely delicious, and was followed by a lucious Greek Salad for two, with Romaine hearts, tomatoes, Kalamata olives, red onions, and served with fresh French Bread. Before our entree's arrived, the General Manager, Michael May, stopped by our table to see if everything was going well. Normally you don't see management that early in the evening, but his warm hospitality only previewed the wonderful entrees on the way. For me, it was the Linguine Alfredo w/Grilled Chicken, and my date had the Italian Gnocchi, with mushrooms in a lemon-rosemary cream sauce, topped with parmesan cheese. It was all wonderful, and those prices. No wonder so many young couples were dining, at these affordable levels.. Of course the ending was the best. I had the moist Chocolate Almond Cake w/Marzipan filling. My date had the Bosco, a torte made with assorted fresh berries and a custard filling. And we both had expresso from the beautiful Cafe Intermezzo Expresso Machine, designed and commissioned by Brian Olson, the owner. And Mr.Olson, himself, personally stopped by the table, to make sure we had a most enjoyable experience. If you want to experience an Atlanta tradition, come here. It dosen't get any better.
Pros: Delightful Space, Wonderful Food, Dessert's From Heaven, & Management That Really Cares!
