Ghetto Business Practices!!! You've been warned!.
I used to frequent Barley's a couple of times a year, mainly for business lunches. I'd been in the evening a few times, and always had a pleasant experience. Not tonight, and "If the Creek Don't Rise", I'll NEVER BE BACK AGAIN!
We arrived around 9:45. There was a $10.00 cover charge per person, and to be honest I didn't think much of it. When you walk inside you see all of these small 2 person tables lined up in rows like church pews, and you could see a band getting themselves together in the corner. We were greeted by a pleasant hostess.
We tried to sit at one of the bar tables along the wall but were told that those seats were reserved, and cost $15.00 each! (I thought to myself $15.00..... FOR WHAT???) Someone suggested that we go back to the hostess counter so that we could be seated. They then proceeded to explain to me that there was a $15.00 per person minimum to which i replied Okay. (I've been to comedy clubs w/ a 2 drink minimum so in my mind "No Big Deal" at this point.)
I wasn't prepared for what happened next! The hostess looked at me and said "The $15 per person minimum has to be PAID UP FRONT"! I said "Excuse Me?" The way I look at it. I'd already paid $10 for parking $20 to enter so I might as well go ahead and pay the RANSOM of $30 because at $30 walking in the door I'm already "Pot Committed" (as we say in the game of "Poker). This really pissed me off, and the hostess that greeted us initially realized it. I told them, after tonight I won't be back, and I'll be sure to do a review to "Warn Others" of your ridiculous policies! She then asked if I would come with her to speak to a Manager because she didn't know where the owner was.
I don't remember the lady's name, but she introduced herself, and asked who I was. I told her, and explained that I thought that it was very rude to set a minimum, and demand that it be paid up front! The manager went on to explain that in the past people have come for the live music and only bought a Coke! *lol*
She said "How can you expect us to pay for our band if people aren't ordering food or drinks?" I said "For one.... What about your $10.00 cover charge?" She replied well if you'd gotten here before 9pm you wouldn't have to pay the cover. She said what you're basically doing is paying for the "Barley Experience" because we have a night club upstairs! I laughed/said to myself "You must mean the "Rip-off Experience"! She then went on to inform me that this policy had been in place for a number of years now. When I explained this to my friend later she said "That's why this place is half empty!"
We were finally seated, and it took the waiter about 15 minutes to show up to take our drink order. The guy was pleasant in demeanor, but he was not very
attentive. He disappeared for 15-25 minute intervals the entire night!
I glanced down at the back of the menu and saw that they automatically add a 15% gratuity to the tab! So in all actuality even if we'd only spent exactly 30.00 I'd have to pay this non-attentive server an automatic tip! Smh
Uptown comedy club is notorious for their "2 Drink Minimum" but at least they have the decency to bring the check at the "End of the Show"! I guess the management and ownership at Barleys clearly didn't "Get the Memo"!
The cover band (and the lead singer in particular was awesome!) My friend told me that we can enjoy the same band at Arizona's (at Stonecrest) on Tuesday's and Friday night for FREE!!!! So i guess i will be trekking it out to Arizona's anytime i want to hear great "Old School Music from a Live Band" from now on!
waiter sucked!!!!. Fourth or fiftth time coming to Barley's from Chicago and every other time has been great!!! except this last weekend. Ive only dealt with two waitresses here, Jazzy from Cali, or the girl with the bright colored locs from Brooklyn. They are awesome!! Very personable, and professional. They cater to us! This last week end we rented a room next door at the Hyatt just to be next door to Barleys. We reserved our party of six upstairs on Friday night and our waiter Devin was terrible. At one point he was so flustered he told me " hold on, my mom will fix this" LOL. then some lady (i guess his mom) proceeded to help him all night with us. Even she didnt help much. All our food was delivered without silverware!!! WOW. The two of them def need more training. Still love this place I just know who to deal with when i come.
Awesome hang out spot for the over 30 crowd. I visited Barley's on a Saturday night. The band was hot! The songs were old school R&B. It's a great date spot and a nice place to hang with friends. It's best to call ahead for reservations in order to get a table near the band. The charge is $15 pp, which goes towards your meal & drinks. The food was ok. The drinks tasted watered down. I did like the bailey's drink. I could not taste the vodka in the mudslide. The pool area is fun. It's $10/hr. I definitely will go back!
Barley's a great saturday night out!!!!. Had a great time at Barley's. It is a must do. I called in for a last minute reservation on a Saturday night and they were able to accomadate my large party.. The D.J. and the band were both excellent. In addition, the waite staff was off the chain!!!Great night out!!!
Barley`s has the best Atmoshere for a Weekend. I`ve been going for years, every guy that comes to shoot pool with me and my brother as now start asking me "When can we get togher and shoot some more pool?" My name is "Las Vegas Lamar",and I`m hear to tell you that there are several pros but little cons. The Pros;more women than men come in,the servers are pleasant & professional, the food is cooked in and opened widow(and you can be sure that you do not get more in the ingredents than what you asked for),live R & B music,a dance for on the top level, pool tables downstairs as well as upstairs and I can go on, and on.. Now the con- The parking is not owned by barley`s,but you do have three paid parking choices The parking mechine next to the Building, the Paid parking that is behind it or the parking deck on the next block (it`s in waking distance) I hope that you would come out and view it and ask the managers, "When will Las Vegas Lamar and his friends coming ?"
Nice place. Food is surprisingly good. Nice selection of beers. I think there are about 9 pool tables. Very nice. Location was easy to find bit parking wasn't. Great place for lunch or a drink.
great musicand great food. BARLEY'S SPORTS BAR AND LOUNGE IS A GREAT ENTERTAINMENT VENUE YOU CAN ENJOY THE BAND AND ALSO PLAY POOL .BARLEY'S ALSO HAVE A GREAT MENU SELECTION AND GREAT SERVICE I WOULD RECOMMEND TO ALL....
A big bunch of BS!.
DON'T BOTHER WASTING YOUR TIME OF MONEY ON THIS HOLE IN THE WALL!! Barleys adds 15% gratuity to EVERYTHING in the building. This was what the Manager told me when I questioned the gratuity on my tab for use of the pool table. If you're in a large group that is to be expected, but if an individual goes to the bar to order a drink or 2 people rent a pool table they still charge you gratuity. You end up paying an additional 15% for a guy to hand you a drink or a woman to take your ID and put it in a box and hand you pool que. The reciept tells you to see a manager if you disagree with the gratuity. Well I did and she was nothing short of a b!t@h! She told me the amount was only $XXXX and it was more trouble than it was worth to pay the transaction fee. Eventually she refunded the gratuity in cash which was just fine with me. It is obvious they are use to a particular clientele and are trying to squeeze every dime out of patrons to make up for either lost business or lack of adequate tips from the clientele they attract. Maybe if the food was better and the staff was worth it, people would gladly tip.
In addition, no one in the group, self include, was thrilled with the food. It was edible, thats all. It wasn't raw, bleeding, or still frozen. Thats the best I can say about it. The drinks tasted like juice and syrup, no alchohol.
The only positive things I can say is the music was great! The DJ upstairs played great old school music and the band downstairs sounded great as well.
