The Scene
Seasoned locals know exactly where it is, but first-timers inevitably drive by several times before spotting the restaurant, camouflaged in a residential neighborhood. Las Palmeras doesn't ooze romance, but the intimate setting and delighful little patio work well for a casual first date or a small gathering of friends. Service is friendly and non-invasive.
The Food
Like the restaurant itself, the focused menu is no frills--just simple, exceptional Cuban cuisine. The Cuban sandwich--one of the city's best--is a smart choice for lunch or a light meal. For dinner, try the masitas de puerco, tender pork chunks in a lemon sauce. Pisto manchego--scrambled eggs with potatoes, shrimp, ham and Spanish sausage--yields plenty of flavor, but is not terribly spicy. Palomilla steak and rotisserie chicken are also strong dishes. Try the guava shells with cream cheese for dessert--it's an intriguing combination of sweet and salty flavors.

Being cuban myself, I found a few problems with this restaurant cuisine, for example anyone that have tasted tostones knows that the plantain must be as green as it can gets. well they did serve semi-ripe tostones (sorry that is a big no no in a cuban kitchen) the owner is a very nice guy but either he figures bc of the lack of cubans in atlanta he can get away cooking crappy cuban food. My wife, which is not cuban (but have developed a cuban taste) told me even that the food did not deserve a second trip. I encourage Felipe (owners name) to go to miami and get a refresher course on cuban cuisine, it looks to me that he has been here too long.

This restaurant is on a cute little Midtown street and feels like it should be a great find (and if you read reviews of it, it sounds like it is). It was perfectly OK, but not out of this world. Decor feels a little tatty.

My partner and I had a wonderful time. We had a late dinner at Kabul and it was great - the restaurant was a little crowded since it was after 7pm. The interior was very nice, the service was good, and the food was excellent
