Contemporary Southern writers often steal the show at the Little Five Points theater..
Overview
A nonprofit theater company producing contemporary plays since 1983, the 200-seat Horizon is situated in the aging Little Five Points Community Center (once an elementary school). Stairs lead from the brightly painted lobby to the theater below, where tiered seating wraps around the proscenium stage. Horizon presents the work of renowned playwrights such as Wendy Wasserstein, Terrence McNally and David Ives and introduces new plays by emerging writers in its intimate space.
The Appeal
Initiated in 1999, an annual New South for the New Century play series examines the contemporary Southern state of mind. Southern writers produce festival plays that reflect on the complexities of life in the region. Two main stage plays in repertory are combined with staged readings and special events to celebrate Southern voices.
