The Scene
This noisily convivial soul food restaurant is a bright spot in the gritty, industrial world of DeKalb Avenue. Preserving the spirit, recipes and popular following of the legendary Deacon Burton's, which previously occupied the space next door, Son's Place has local legend status, if only by association.
The Food
Hoecakes, collard greens, gooey mac and cheese and, of course, fried chicken are the stars of this reliable down-home lunch destination. Vegetables--especially candied turnips, buttery lima beans and whipped potatoes--are fresh and tend to outshine the main dishes. But the pork chops, meatloaf and the fish special are good, as well. Be sure to save room for the cobbler of the day, the caramel cake or the to-die-for banana pudding.

Steve Harvey said its the best fired chicken in the world and he is right. Rarely does the chicken sit around and the big boss man makes sure he has just enough to finish of the day. Still wondering about the old school cafeteria trays but once the squash casserole and fired chicken hit the plate it is like its served on fine china. Like any other soulful place you won't like everything but the traditional dishes are incredible. Get some sweet tea while you are there.

Great traditional southern food at a very reasonable price. The fried chicken is juicy and flavorful and the sides are so good you wish you could go back for seconds. I only wish this place was closer to my office or house. Then again, that would probably be bad for my waistline.

This was a great place to go when you know the money goes into the food, and not how the place is decorated. It was really good. The portions were just right. To anyone who says the portions are small, its because they must weigh 200 lbs + and eats over 5 huge meals a day. The food is great! did not have the tea, but had everything else and felt like i just walked out of my grandmother's kitchen (who can cook her head off!). i will definitely be going again.
