“When I don't go to Shields I go to the Dekalb Farmer's Market - they have great meat, but they don't have the knowledgable friendly service you get from Geoff.”
“Unfortunately, when I picked up the pig, it was significantly heavier than what was ordered (not entirely their fault - there's a lot of variation when you order a whole pig) but the price they charged me was nearly double the quoted price!”
Geoff is great. The meats are the best you can get.. You need veal for osso bucco, call Geoff and it will be there when you get there. Any speciality cut of meat is done right, every time. And it will be fresh. Don't be put off by the exterior--no it is not part of the pharmacy. I drive from Buckhead to Emory just to buy meats there.
Amazing Meat Market.
When you walk into this little meat market attached to a CVS you think, I'm going to get meat here? Fight those flight urges people, this is meat heaven! Walking in you don't see much, but thats what your friendly neighborhood butcher is for. Make sure you ask the man for the best he has because he will give it to you... and how. I had the best (and I don't say this lightly) THE BEST lamb I have ever had in the 28 years of my life. And by the way, I didn't even like lamb. My butcher made me a total convert.
Moose and Jeff are the best. Go on down, don't have your thumb up your butt, get the best meat you've ever had, and in the process you'll be supporting an amazing local business.
STAY AWAY - RUDE. This butcher shop has just gone over the edge. I have purchased lots from Shield's over the years, and now they are jerks. I called to order a pound of ground veal and a pound of ground pork for pick up the next day. The OWNER (no less) told me that it wasn't a good time and that my order wasn't important because of his Christmas rush (Christmas is still 6 days away). He told me that my request simply wasn't important to him. When I indicated that I was suprised that my business wasn't important (I would have been back after Christmas too)- he told me that my order wasn't important and HUNG UP ON ME. It breaks my heart, but I will not darken their door again anytime soon. Better not have any special requests.
meats. though ive been out of state for 16 years..not only have i enjoyed many varieties of shields meat market..i also worked there off and on for 5 yrs...now im back and cant believe some of these reviews..geoff,gene,and charles and myself always took the customers first. hopefully i can get down there real soon
Great Service, Great Meat.
I've only been to Shields twice, but both times the customer service has been extraordinary. The first time I went there I arrived at 7:01 pm on a Friday night and Geoff (the owner) had just locked the door (they close at 7). He let me in and for all intents and purposes reopened just for me. I came for a steak and he cut a fresh ribeye to my exact specifications. Even then, he didn't try to rush me out - he asked if I needed anything else and even answered some random questions I had about some meat behind the counter. That alone is why I will keep coming back - you don't get customer service like that anymore.
When I don't go to Shields I go to the Dekalb Farmer's Market - they have great meat, but they don't have the knowledgable friendly service you get from Geoff.
So to the people that had bad experiences, I don't know what happened. The other folks in the shop were just as friendly and helpful. Perhaps they aren't as knowledgeable. Go back and ask for Geoff and I can assure you that you will not be disappointed.
Not pleased with my experience there.
I wanted to order a whole pig. Called several places and got a good price quote from Shields. Unfortunately, when I picked up the pig, it was significantly heavier than what was ordered (not entirely their fault - there's a lot of variation when you order a whole pig) but the price they charged me was nearly double the quoted price!! I was not pleased with my experience at Shields. I really prefer the service I've gotten from the meat markets in the Sweet Auburn Curb market.
(Incidentally, when I viewed this, there was a 1-star, a 2-star, and a 3-star review, yet the overall rating is 4-stars?? how does that work?)
MEATMANNY.
WAS LOOKING FOR SOME GOOD SAUSAGES FOR A SANDWHICH. YOU KNOW JUST SAUSAGE ONIONS AND MUSTARD. THESE GUYS ONLY HAD ANDUOILLE SAUSAGE. WHAT KIND OF SELECTION IS THAT. I HAVE NEVER GONE BACK.
THE REASON THIS PLACE IS MIGHT BE POPULAR IS THAT IT'S THE ONLY SUPPOSED BUTCHER SHOP AROUND DECATUR. THEY ARENT GOOD . LIKE EDDIE MURPHY SAYS IF YOUR STARVING AND SOMEONE THROWS YOU A CRACKER IT TASTE LIKE THE BEST DARN CRACKER YOU EVER HAD.
No idea why this place is so popular. They don't know meat..
I can't figure it out. After watching FoodNetwork for a decade or so, I know how to make a burger. So I walk in for some ground chuck and the guy behind the counter proudly claims their ground beef as the best. I ask him how much fat is in there (looking for around 15-20%) and he beams, "about 5% or so. You gotta have a little fat in there for flavor."
Oooo-k. So I try to make a burger with the beef at home... I can get much better at Publix.
I then order some "dry-aged" porterhouses for my wife's bday. I tell the guy what I want and when I get home I unpack and see two 1" thick porterhouses. Who grills porterhouses an inch thick? I could have screamed.
Had to try their "famous" meatloaf too. Bought a 2 lb loaf... butcher says everyone loves them! Cooked it as instructions said -- it was disgusting. It was the consistency of spam. Symptom of working the meat way too much, a cardinal sin of meatloaf making.
This place is over-hyped and really for people who don't know much about good meats.
sometimes great, sometimes not. Shield's is a small meat market that has a small-town feel. The customer service is sometimes very good (friendly and whatnot) and other times its not -- its a gamble!
