The Scene
Located in the heart of the Highlands, this popular restaurant draws heavily from the local crowd of good-looking 20-somethings. Inside the large, simply decorated dining room, long and closely spaced tables create a noisy conviviality that's ideal for first or second dates, or get-togethers with friends. Service is fast-moving, but sometimes lacks personality.
The Food
The fact that this mainstream Thai restaurant is always busy testifies more to its consistency and reasonable prices than to its authenticity or imagination. Favorites like Panang chicken or Pad-See-U are worth trying, as is the chicken coconut soup or a special of marinated cucumber and chilis in small, crisp tasty baskets. Spicy fresh Nua Nam Tok (grilled sirloin with lime, chili and onions) is especially good.

Went here last night for a first date and it was as good as I remember it being. Of course, you must start with the coconut chicken soup which is absolutely delicious and comes to your table in a big flaming bowl. It's a little loud and crowded, but luckily we were able to get a table in the corner, so it was quite nice. I ordered the sweet and sour chicken (I know, I know, Michael E. can't you be a bit more adventurous than that?!?!) and enjoyed it very much. There's a bit of a language barrier with some of the waiters, but I think it adds to the experience. We all figured out what we wanted after pointing to the menu. This place has been around for a long time and I imagine it will keep going strong for many years. Great place to take out-of-town friends, too.

I loved their Thai Iced Tea and BBQ chicken. The made to order stir fry request always reassure me of the freedom to choose. I love this place...go vist!

It's a different atmosphere from Harry & Sons or the former Thai Bowl, but Surin deserves a place in its own right. They are also now populating the wilds of Alabama with good Thai food, which is a noble mission.
