Do not buy a gift certificate here. In a town with so many boutiques - the only thing that really separates them all is customer service. Dakota J's falls short of having good customer service not only by the staff but mostly by the owner. I've been a loyal customer for years and at least 1/2 of my wardrobe is from this little boutique in VaHi. My husband buys gift certificates for every holiday for me there because he knows how much I loved the store. Recent events have made me feel quite differently about this shop. With a balance remaining on my gift cert., I went into the shop to make my selection when I was informed that the computer had lost everything. No backup I wondered? I didn't have a receipt which was my fault but every time I went in there they were able to pull it up on the computer. This represented good customer service. I called the owner who told me I was out of luck and basically lost my remaining balance. She offered NOTHING in return and didn't budge. So after spending thousands of dollars in her store - this was the treatment I received. Very neighborly!

Not that impressed. I found the staff to be quite rude and unhelpful. They acted as if they were too busy to help even though there was no one else in the store and they were not doing anything behind the counter. Their merchandise was overpriced and I found several items that were torn. Save your money for a place with better customer service and quality.

Guy point of view. I've visited Dakota J's several times and have always received a smile and friendly service. I'm not sure what the other two raters are talking about, but I've always received great customer service. The store owner actually gave a demo of some of the flavored lotions. Great place to shop! ! ! !

CONSISTENTLY RUDE, POOR QUALITY, OVERPRICED. I made the unfortunate mistake of making a purchase and returning the item later to receive store credit. When I received the store credit I was told that it was valid for an unlimited timeframe and that they kept a record at the store therefore there was no need for a voucher. Although I requested a record of the store credit on 3 occasions they refused to provide it and repeatedly told me that I could use the credit at any time. During my most recent visit I was told they did not have a record of my store credit and that store credit was not valid after 6 months. The staff was extremely rude and surprisingly confrontational even when I came into browse. This appears to be poorly managed store with by far the worst customer service I have ever experienced.

The array of aromatherapy oils, incense, and flowing clothes make this a one-stop shop for anyone looking to curl up and get cozy.. The Scene
Upon entering this store, you're blanketed with the sweet smell of oil and bathed in subdued lighting. A laid-back sales staff navigates you past amply stocked shelves and tables, all full of the store's relaxing oils, incense, candles and flowing clothing.

The Goods
This store is full of soaps, lotions, perfumes and candles. Wind your way past tables of stationery and ornaments, racks of fluffy velour jumpers and lacy, beaded dresses. Ladylike accessories, such as straw hats with flowers, abound. The store's clothing items are not bland or monochromatic. Think more hippy chic with embroidered flowers and prints, as well as the tie-dyed subtlety of earthy colors.

best to keep walking. While Dakota J's might have an excellent location, (the main strip of the Virginia Higlands), and cute, typical boutique products (soaps, jewelry, clothing), what they are missing is customer service. If you're looking for kindness--or for people who stand behind the products they sell--I'd recommend skipping this store, and opting instead for any of the other nearby boutiques that carry nearly identical products with far better management and service.
