Editorial Review for La Raine's Boutique – by Paige Bowers
The Scene
Wine-red lampshades, cluttered antiques, 1920s-era tunes and a helpful sales staff all hearken back to the time of well-dressed ladies who didn't leave home without dainty white gloves. Towards the back of this quaint boutique is the store's bridal salon, which is full of everything--from dresses to advice--that a proper bride needs.
The Goods
Romantic evening wear from the likes of Jessica McClintock and After Six billow from hangers around this cozy, family-owned store. Among the finds: classic, little black dresses; beaded sheaths with spaghetti straps; jewel-toned prom gowns as well as cozy slacks and sweaters. Perfect little accents such as matching evening bags and dainty jewelry are scattered on tables and furniture throughout the store. For the bride--the store carries everything from bridal gowns, bridesmaid dresses, veils, shoes and other accessories.

I recently moved to the Va-Hi neighborhood and was thrilled to learn there was a bridal boutique within walking distance, because I'm getting married in August. My mom and I spontaneously stopped by while running errands because I still need a veil. I guess since we were dressed casually and wearing flip-flops, we were not the type of clientele Ms. La Raine likes to capitalize on. The very first thing she did was inquire what the NAME BRAND of my dress is, as she eyed what my mom and I were wearing. When she learned I had bought a discontinued gown straight off the dressrack, she really lost her composure. La Raine unsolicitedly informed us that we made a huge mistake by buying a 'cheap' dress because any dry cleaner/alterations we use will certainly ruin it. Despite my irritation, I turned the topic to veils. Since she had more than one shade of 'champagne' veils, I remarked that I'd probably need to compare my dress directly to veils. La Raine looked appalled and informed me that I could never be allowed to bring my second rate gown into her shop in order to compare it against veils. She curtly cut us off and hurried to go help other customers. No exaggeration, she acted like we were a liability even BEING in her shop. I overheard the syrupy sweet tone she used with the older, better-dressed women she was helping on our way out. Wearing jeans and sandals does not indicate anything about how much money I make or was willing to spend in her store. La Raine will now be missing out on the multitude of bridal purchases I will be making this year, as well the business from all the girls that were in my Georgia Tech sorority - everyone I know will be advised to never use this shop.
Pros: Pretty dresses and jewelery
Cons: Bad service, rude, snobby owner, miserable experience

The selection of dresses is lovely and I found a few great dresses. But after purchasing a dress, I was told that they would not have time to alter the dress during the 2 months prior to my wedding. I was literally told to "stay the same weight" for three months. I found shoes that I liked, but they did not have my size to try on. They ordered my size and when the shoes came in, they were too big. I was told that I could not return the shoes. How can they not allow you to return shoes that you couldn't even try on before purchase? One salesperson told me I could exchange them; but then the manager came over and abruptly told me that I could not exchange or return them. They recommended getting them altered at a shoe repair shop. The recommended shoe repair shop was terrible. LaRaines also recommended a veil and headpiece; but I found out later from my hair stylist that they weren't meant to be worn together. Of course, no returns. The owner of the store acted very strange. She would interrupt me as I spoke with the person doing my alterations. She treated me like I wasn't there. I think LaRaines has become too popular and as a result, they do not feel the need for good customer service. It's a shame, since the selection of dresses is good. But I wouldn't recommend the store to anyone.
Pros: Good selection of gowns
Cons: Awful customer service, if you do buy a dress, don't accept their recommendations for accessories, inflexible altering
