The Scene
A warm airiness fills this popular neighborhood bakery. Baskets brim with husky fresh-baked loaves; golden croissants hover on a cooling rack. Pastries, cookies and scones stock the display cases. Budget-free party planners, gift hunters and novice gourmands drop in, while stroller-jogging Morningsiders and cookie monsters sneak out.
The Food
Life really is better in Morningside: double chocolate chunk cookies to be purchased by the pound, lemon squares, midnight cake, old-school French pastries, Heath bar crusted brownies. Plus, there's the Gruyere scones, birthday cakes, European chocolates and nine varieties of fresh bread. Try sampling the made-to-order sandwiches at lunch or the tempting point-of-purchase displays. The eclectic wine collection features a number of reasonably priced gems.

At first I thought the desserts were excellent although quite a bit pricey. My second experience, however was not very well... There is a lemon-merengue pie on the website but when I called to order it, the man argued with me that there wasn't and that they Couldn't even make one. The previous review of the attitude there being rude and "all that" was correct. I guess the awards have gone to their heads... Lost another customer.

I heard raves and raves about Alon's and finally went. Totally disappointed. The sandwiches were mediocre, not that this fact had any impact on pricing. I would eat at Panera Bread a million times before I would go back here. No idea about the pastries though...

Everyone seems to know Alons. I went there for lunch with out of town guests and we were not terribly impressed with their sandwiches and salads. But their breads and pasteries are wonderful and I highly recommend them
