Editorial Review for Georgia Governor's Mansion – by Darren Kennedy

The Appeal
Ever since the Georgia Governor's Mansion opened its doors for Lester Maddox and family in 1968, the enormous edifice on West Paces Ferry Road has drawn the attention of Georgians from across the state. Its Greek Revival-style facade features 30 magnificent columns, while interior accents include pieces from the Federalist Period, specifically the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The mansion boasts a signed, first-edition copy of Margaret Mitchell's "Gone With the Wind" in the library, and displayed prominently in the entrance hall is the torch used by Muhammad Ali to light the Olympic Cauldron during the 1996 Summer Games.

The Experience
Lasting approximately 40 minutes from beginning to end, the free, self-guided tours take guests through 10 rooms on the mansion's first floor. Knowledgeable hosts are stationed in each room to point out items of historical significance, as well as to answer any questions visitors may have.
