Oh The Independent. Back in 91 when I first stepped into Duprees Tavern, now known as the Independent, I was given the boot for being underage. It was a weekend afternoon where a few friends of mine were waiting on Total Recall to start downstairs at the theater.

A couple years later, a buddy of mine took me back to Duprees to play some pool. It was a great atmosphere then. The bartender Sonya James, John and Richard Dupree behind the pool counter and Runa Ware and Anna Krantz running around on the service floor.

I found myself back in this place several times a week. It's not just a pool hall bar to get lost in libation. There is much more ot offer.

I've made some great friends through Duprees and the Independent, shared some laughs, shared great times. You'll still find me here several times a week where you can still find Runa behind the bar.

The Independent does have the best free Sunday Poker tournament in town as well as great pool leagues. For those of you that like to ride 2 wheeled mechanized vehicles, feel free to ride on up. It's also a motorcycle friendly establishment. It always has been and always will.

My favorite bar. This is my go-to bar. My friends that I go with are a mix of drinkers and non-drinkers, and we all get great service. The Indy has a friendly staff that usually has my 420 ready for me by the time I get to the bar, and they've got great trivia several nights a week. There are plenty of board games, including the mighty Uno, and an old SNES system. If I'm alone, it's usually not long before I can strike up a conversation with somebody at the bar. It can be a little smoky, but them's the breaks of hanging out in bars.

The Nuts. Great staff, great crowd, best free poker tournament in Atlanta, darts, pool tournaments, trivia, crack machines, uno. The line was long to kick some pitcher in his frutos secos.

Great place for a beer and poker. I've been going to the Indy for about 5 years, and the barstaff is very nice. Since I started to play poker there, they've known my name, as well as everyone elses around me. Decent beer selection, and a great liquor selection! They always have a beer special of the day, and always have the newest Sweetwater.

My favorite spot in town. I went into the Independent for the first time 5 years ago when I moved to midtown to join a pool league and meet people. I've met some wonderful people over the years and the bartenders (they all take turns making rounds at the tables for drink orders) have always been friendly and checked on me and my friends no matter where we moved to in the bar. This was one of the only bars that carried my favorite liqueur (Licor 43) when I moved here and I'm pretty sure I'm the only person who orders it. Lately, I haven't been drinking and my switch to cokes hasn't affected my service at all. If I want to relax and have a good time, this is the place I come to.

Best Pool Hall in town!. I`ve been coming to this bar 21 years and not once had bad service. The staff makes you feel like family. Even if you don`t know people in Atlanta, it`s a great place to join a pool or dart league to find some great friends fast. I love all the board game too! The trivia on Tues. Wed. and Thurs. are a lot of fun also.

Awful Service, high prices for beer, another lame Midtown excuse for a bar.. This bar defines the word awful. The servers tend to disappear on you, so you basically have to walk up to the bar area, where the bartenders also ignore you for a few minutes, and ask to be checked out. This place also has decided, as every other Midtown bar has done, to raise their beer prices. They do not have a way to justify this, but they have decided to do so. I would like to ask all Midtown residents that they save their money and they start to visit bars outside of the city. The bar scene in Midtown is getting worse and worse. The Independent has an awful selection of beers. They don't have anything that I couldn't buy at a gas station. The Independent is the reason why I have decided not to go to Midtown bars anymore. Don't come and take my drink order if you plan on remaining aloof the rest of the evening. Also, THIS BAR DOES NOT SELL PITCHERS SO BE AWARE!!!! That is right, you saw what I just said bar-goers this place has yet to develop pitcher technology. I know it is hard pouring beer into a pitcher, but I am sure they will figure it out one day. Do yourself a favor, kick yourself in the nuts before going to this bar. It seems that the bars in Decatur are appealing to people who actually want to drink a decent amount and spend money that way. In Midtown they are developing a system where you spend a lot of money by drinking 2 beers. What a concept. My brother, who used to frequent this bar has told me that they will call you by your first name only if you spend a lot of money at this place, other than that they tend to treat you like you should be happy that they are willing to serve you a drink. There website is also not working, which gives me a great indication of how they run everything they touch. I hope this place goes out of business. Good day.
