Overview
The 2,884 acres of protected land contain several small peaks, hiking trails, historic markers, a small Civil War museum and an observation deck. From the observation deck, look southeast to Atlanta's sundry skylines and east to Stone Mountain. The crowded one-mile trail to the summit offers a good workout, but a disappointing finish at a parking lot. Serious hikers tackle a series of loops ranging from two to 16 miles in length. All are great jogs, too.

Facts

The park is the site of the Atlanta Campaign, the June 18 to July 2, 1864, Civil War battle. It was here that Gen. William T. Sherman's Union forces encountered a Confederate entrenchment. Sherman tried to conquer the undermanned troops, but eventually had to concede the battle and march on to Atlanta. The three battlefield areas are in front of the visitor center, off Burnt Hickory Road and at Cheatham Hill.

An almost 3,000 acre park with fantastic hiking trails just off of I-75. You can discover the battle sites or enjoy the park for it's serene qualities and feeling after reaching the top. Good place to bring the dog too though some parts of the trails are narrow. Great spot in the morning or late afternoon. Many locals will come here every day for the exercise as it is hardly crowded for being a tourist spot.

This park, 25 miles north of Atlanta, was the site that the Confederates drew back to after the fall of Chattanooga in 1863. Wrapped in tons of Civil War memorabilia and artifacts, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park is a wonderful day trip if you are near the area. Slide presentations of the battles are available in the visitors station. Monday through Friday you can drive your own vehicle through the cannons and park 200 yards below the summit. There is wonderful hiking and has wonderful displays along the trail. There is also, on Saturdays and Sundays, a free shuttle bus to take you up the mountain with a tour guide. The trips go every half hour, but on a clear sunny day most will hike at least halfway just to see all the natural beauty of the land. There are two other principle battlefields, Cheatham hill and Kolb's Farm, that are 4 and 7 miles from Kennesaw Mountain. These can be accessible for the serious hiker. Maps are available at the visitors center. Picnic areas with grills are available near the parking area of the visitors center if you want to make an entire day of it. The park itself is 4-5 miles west of I-75, and is open M-F 8:30-5, Sat and Sun to 6 pm. PROS: a step back in time, loads of info to take it CONS: the whole family might not get a kick out of a civil war battlefield
