Editorial Review for Sycamore Grill – by Jane Garvey
The Scene
Named for the 150-year-old sycamore tree that shades its verandah, this charming restaurant served as the village of Stone Mountain's first post office and, during the Civil War, as a hotel. Warm lighting creates a romantic setting. As you sit at your table, look for acrylic protective sheets applied over exposed wall. They allow you to see the old construction methods.
The Food
Southern touches, rather than historically authentic dishes, are the focus of a restaurant that emphasizes atmosphere more than flavor. Lunch includes a popular blackberry chicken salad. At dinner, dishes like moist and crispy crab cakes or tender, well-flavored meatballs make dependable choices. Steaks are properly prepared, as well, and even a more adventuresome dish like pheasant--in this case served with a tasty brown sauce--pays rich rewards. For dessert try the banana cream pudding or tart, deep dish Key lime pie.
