The Scene – Located in a nearly invisible strip center along with a funeral products store, House of Chan maintains an unshakably dignified air, with its elegant black awning, marble-tiled entry and stately Muzak. Though small, it feels clean and airy. It's a welcome stop on a rainy night. – – The Food – Fresh ingredients and standout sauces are the keynote here. Spicy Hunan eggplant with chicken combines slivers of Asian eggplant with tender strips of chicken breast in a slightly sweet, almost buttery sauce. Moo shu pork contrasts crunchy vegetables and mildly…

I'm from New York so I think I know good Chinese food

by bcdshorty at Citysearch

I'm from New York and have been searching for about 3 years for great Chinese. I have travelled all over Atlanta in search of it. I went to House of Chan's because of all the positive reviews. I ordered the General Tso's Chicken and it came with fried rice. My boyfriend ordered 10wings and vegetable rice. I can honestly say they have the freshest and lightest tasting chicken i've had in Georgia. But honestly I will say the food isn't as great as everyone says. I will say the Chinese is about as good as you can get in Georgia. The chicken is awesome, But the chicken wings were salty but they were fried well and they tasted great-minus the salt. The rice was very light and tasty but they had NO salt on it. I would recommend this place. All in all the food was great. But I content on believing that the best Chinese comes from China, New York and California. Everything else is second to it. I will surely eat there again. Maybe they had an off night. hope this helps

  • Pros: Real Chicken
  • Cons: Either too much salt or not enough

Good entrees, bad egg rolls, overbearing hostess

by speechykeen at Citysearch

My husband and I no longer eat at House of Chan. This makes me very sad, b/c despite the fact that their egg rolls and crab rangoon were never very good, they had the best sesame chicken and beef/broccoli and we actually loved their free hot tea. We ate there a few times a month, and the small staff there started to recognize us.

The hostess is very nice, I swear. But it slowly escalated from greeting us warmly, to chatting for a moment when she sat us, to stopping by to chat while we were eating, to sitting and talking with us until our food arrived ... until the last time we went, when she pulled a chair up to our booth and talked to us the whole time we were there. We provided one-word answers to her questions, didn't ask any of our own, referred to it as our "date night" ... all to no avail. It was just too awkward, so we stopped going.

Anyway, the entrees are really amazing, so I highly recommend House of Chan ... just don't be too friendly with the staff, I guess.

  • Pros: Great prices, yummy entrees, kind staff, clean place
  • Cons: the deep-fried appetizers (egg rolls, crab rangoon) always seemed to be cool in the middle; overbearing hostess

Fresh ingredients, good service

by sttarlite at Citysearch

The House of Chan isn't your average strip mall Chinese restaurant. It's been family run for over 20 years. The food was good, different than your average fair. I had the egg drop soup, which was slightly less salty than some versions. I also had the fried rice, which was not as greasy as some; it tasted lighter. My only complaint was that the rice did not have many vegetables in it.. My dining companion had the house special of shrimp, beef, and tofu. I enjoyed a few pieces of his tofu, and the soy based sauce was quite good. Service was pleasant and very prompt. The hot tea that is included with the meal is very flavorful. It is a few dollars more than most Chinese restaurants, but the fresh food is worth the price.

  • Pros: Fresh ingredients, efficient service, large portion sizes
  • Cons: Hard to find
