Folk craft as fine art..
The Scene
American Sampler is the kind of friendly store where the staff offers customers soft drinks. Its location in Roswell's historic district makes it a perfect place for browsers to wander in by chance while they're strolling the city's sidewalks.
The Goods
Owner Sandy Gilliam has cherry-picked a winsome collection of contemporary arts and crafts. Traditional genres include redware, shaker boxes, baskets, quilts, hooked rugs and rag dolls. But there's also edgier work like platters with Edgar Gilliam's stylized nudes. Particularly amusing are shelves of expressive "face" jugs and framed antique samplers. It takes only one visit to get hooked on this shop's marvelous American folk art.
