Editorial Review for Salvatore Trattoria – by Philip Malkus
The Scene
No yellow-sponged walls, no imported tile, no picturesque, faux-crumbling murals: This is what a Southern Italian neighborhood eatery should look like. A partition divides the smokers at the bar from families and first-daters in the simple dining room. Word is out on this place, and devoted regulars keep it frequently packed. Servers treat you like long-lost family.
The Food
Cooked with integrity and soulfulness, the food is no pallid Italian imitation. Hone in on the classics and you won't go wrong. Pasta e fagioli soup is complex and sublime, and fried mozzarella is astonishingly light. Pastas are simple and fresh--penne all Amatriciana with pancetta, white wine and tomato sauce is a standout. Too much nutmeg obscures the veal with crab and spinach, but capers and olives pack a balanced punch in the grouper alla Livornese. Of course, there's cannoli and ricotta cheesecake for dessert.

Insider Tips
When to GoCome early in the week and early in the evenings when the throng isn't so thick. As with many old-school Italian joints, regulars get preferential treatment when it's busy.
Know Before You GoThe kitchen often has gnocchi and lasagna for those who know to ask. The lasagna is so delicious you might consider a to-go order to heat up for lunch the next day.

My husband (a NY Italian) and I moved to GA 3 years ago and decided to try Salvatore's 'cause it's my husband's middle name. The outside is definately deceving, and unless looking for it you'll drive right by. But, it is so worth it!!! We sat at the bar where Salvatore happened to be bartending that night. He was engaging and hospitable to two new Geogians. The food was great!! Nothing fancy, just great authentic Italian. Reminds us of our favorite place back in NY. Three years later, we still go back and Salvatore and his family (literally) still take great care of us. As for the review titled "Nasty", this is a family owned place, not a "coporate" restaurant, they do not have the "Board" breathing down their necks. They'll treat you the way you treat them. Everyone I've ever brought there has been treated fantastically and like family!!
Pros: Authentic Italian
Cons: Parking

We took our parents here when they were in town. We had not been in a couple of years. The food was good but not outstanding as I had remembered it. We will choose someplace else to show off an Atlanta restaurant.
Pros: Okay Italian.
Cons: Just okay Italian.
