Editorial Review for Hashiguchi Japanese Restaurant – by Jane Garvey
The Scene
A simple slip of space in a garden-variety shopping center becomes an oasis of repose, with just a few exquisite, small Japanese prints on the wall and the occasional raku pot. Soft Japanese instrumental music pipes overhead. Many patrons are Japanese, a good sign of quality.
The Food
The wide-ranging menu offers more than first-rate sushi and sashimi. A soft-shell crab roll stands out, with crispy crab tucked inside a knob of sushi rice. Butter-tender grilled eel could be the best in town. The Japanese menu offers adventuresome items. Deep-fried large smelts (shishamo), crisp and supremely fresh, are backed by a slice of deep-fried mountain carrot and small dishes like tender, billowy grilled Japanese eggplant and crisp seaweed salad delight. Mackerel in rice vinegar with paper-thin sliced cucumbers couldn't be fresher. Cold udon noodles come with a soy-based dipping sauce, minced scallions, seaweed and grated radish.

I had high expectations for this restaurant because I have heard that a lot of Japanese go eat there. This is only partially true. The Japanese only went for the sushi. There were none in the dining room. However, my experience on 02-15-2008 left a bad taste in my mouth and I promised myself never to go back. First off, the two of us to a tiny table! It looked and felt like a child's table, for me, an average sized Asian and my big American friend. Only later, when someone canceled were we provided a bigger table. Then, service was bad. The waitress, a young Japanese was never to be found. Sometimes when we needed something and tried to motion to her when she re-appeared from her "hiding place", she would brush us aside. Food was touch and go. The sushi (I had yellowtail and salmon) was fresh and good. Gyoza was horrendous. The ginger sauce for the salad felt watered down (maybe to save costs!). Seafood shrimp and scallop teishoku was ok. Una don was expensive and below average. Asking for additional gari (only a few pieces was given) caused $3 to the added to the bill without warning! My biggest beef was with the hamachi gama. First of all, they served only half of the cheekbone. You can tell that the full cheekbone would have been ok, but half was a bit miserly! Then, there was the price. It was listed as $8.50 on the regular dinner menu, and on the special dinner menu. However, when the bill came, it was listed as $10. When I ask why that was, the waitress said the price has increased and refused to budge! Even when the manager was called, he sounded angry and upset and refused to budge. He said that the price has increased and blamed the waitress for forgetting to change the price on the menu. After trying to put forward my case that I should have been informed if the price had gone up, I saw that the owner and waitress were stubborn and refused to budge. I paid up but promised myself not to go back. Please be careful if you do!
Pros: Good sushi
Cons: Bad service, tiny tables, incorrect prices, angry manager

My boyfriend and I visited Hashiguchi because of the excellent reviews, and the fact that it's Zagat rated. I've eaten sushi for years - in Detroit (my hometown), Boston, Miami, Chicago and San Diego. I love it; I can't get enough. And I especially love QUALITY sushi. Not just fried, American versions (although, this can be good if done well) of this Japanese food. The quality of the fish is very important to me, and that's what Hashiguchi has - quality fish. This isn't a pretentious place you go to be seen, although there seem to be many of these types of sushi places in Atlanta. But if you are looking for good quality fish at a decent price, this is the place to go. Every peice of ngiri was excellent. Many times, I go to get sushi, and find that while MOST of the fish is great, there are one or two pieces that just aren't good, or even bad. But all of the fish here was excellent - the tuna, the salmon, the yellowtail and the eel were all wonderful, flavorful and perfect. We'll be back again.
Pros: Great quality fish
Cons: Ambience, location
