We Used to Love You, Shillings :(
by jpegs at Citysearch
We hadn't eaten at Shillings in over a year -- but it used to be one of our favorite "special occasion" restaurants. I've always been especially fond of their steak au poivre. So as a birthday surprise for my husband, I decided to take him for a romantic dinner at this Marietta institution.
I called about a week ahead of time and made sure to book our favorite table upstairs by the window, and was really looking forward to this occasion.
When we arrived on time for our reservation, the hostess actually laughed when I told her we had booked the window table. She said that whole side of the room had already been booked by a wedding party. When I told her I had been assured that we could have the window table she asked what time of day I had called. I said it was probably mid-afternoon -- she then said that the "day" people don't usually know what they're doing and shouldn't actually be taking reservations! We were then given a table near the kitchen.
We ordered a bottle of nice cabernet sauvignon. When the waiter arrived with two GLASSES of the wine, we pointed out that we had ordered a bottle. He took the two glasses back and came back with the same two glasses of wine, along with the opened bottle. Near the end of the meal, having finished the wine, we decided it had been so good that we WOULD order two more glasses. The waiter informed us that it wasn't served by the glass.
I had ordered my favorite steak au poivre, which I've always loved because of the wonderful peppercorn-laden sauce. There were NO PEPPERCORNS in the sauce! It had a little bit of coarsely ground pepper in what appeared to be a standard bland "white sauce". Their steak au poivre used to be outstanding!!
What has happened to you, Shillings???! We used to love you, but we won't be back. Money is too valuable a commodity these days to return to a restaurant that no longer offers good food and service.
- Pros: The room temperature was fine
- Cons: Too many to list here -- read the review
Mariett's Best Bar/ Resturant
by tuffy3 at Citysearch
We ate in the upstairs resturant. The bar is small and quiet, serving generous drinks and personal service.. The dinner was excellent. We had the salmon grilled with bourbon sause and a 16oz T bone. Both were first class. Our table overlooked historic Marietta square and the night we wer there a singer/pianist added to our enjoyment. In all it was a very pleasant evening. Reasonable Pricing.
- Pros: Pleasant personal service.
- Cons: None
