there are other Mexican places – The first thing my friend did was to go to the bathroom. It's usually an indicator of the place. According to her, it was dirty and grimy and smelly. The food was mediocre and the wait staff took too long to serve the food. There are plenty of other places you can go to for Mexican.
Great food and fun! – This is a comfortable, casual restaurant with delicious food. The menu is easy to understand which is not always the case at other Mexican restaurants.
A family operated business with excellent service and food. What more could you want?
Shocked at how good it was. – I'll be the first to admit, I've driven by Mexico City Gourmet 100's of times, but never stopped in. The other day, we were craving a margarita and stopped by for a quick bite and a couple of drinks. What I didn't realize was their margarita recipe is something really, really special. So, we decided to hang out there for a bit. The house specialities are where it's at-- this is where the restaurant shines. We will be back soon.
Decatur's Most Authentic, Flavorful Mexican Restaurant – Dropped by Mexico City in Decatur the other day and tried the place out. The manager, Larry was very cool and welcoming. All the recipes are family recipes and were amazing. Try the specialities and not just the traditional combos. I'll be back.
Terrible. NEVER go there. Zero Stars. – Who runs out of RICE at a Mexican restaurant? And that wouldn't have been a big deal, all the waiter had to say was "I'm really sorry, we ran out of rice, what can I substitute for you instead?" Rather, when we asked where the rice was, we got "Oh we ran out. Sorry." and he walked away. And we got to the restaurant ...at 9:00, were not served dinner until almost 11 pm. I didn't eat it, I had the waiter immediately bring a box. His tip was the rice he failed to mention did not exist. So I don't know how the food tastes. Unacceptable. Awful service, I will be warning everyone I know not to go there.
Texas Margs are the best – We were in Decatur for an event and needed a place for a bite to eat. I had heard of Mexico City Gourmet but hadn't made it there yet. Now, that I’ve experienced their Texas margs, I will be back! I favor a Texas margarita, but I asked the waiter what he recommended as they have a variety of high quality margs, he jumped to say the Texas was his favorite - not too sweet and really good. Also indicated if we were planning on a pitcher between the 2 of us, we might be spending the night. We opted for a smaller size with a mental note to come back with a DD or more people. We shared a chimichanga which was enough for 2 (especially after you've chowed on the chips) and it was tasty. Definitely would tell others to visit Mexico City Gourmet. The waiter also mentioned they do a great Cinco De Mayo – good to know!
What the h*ll happened? – We haven't been to MCG in a couple of years, so maybe things have been changing for a while, but we could not be more disappointed. The place used to have more ambiance, but now you mainly notice the significant water damage to the ceiling tiles and walls. The men's restroom was really grimy, looking like it hadn't been cleaned since the original Cinco de Mayo in 1862. The women's restroom had severe water damage, with noticeable and widespread water damage on the walls. There is also a hole in the floor so large that you can see the dirt from the ground underneath the restaurant. What is most disconcerting is that the bathroom is right next to the kitchen, making the food pretty suspect in our minds....
And as for the food, it was not at all what we remembered from years gone by. They used to have very good and flavorFUL food. We ordered enchiladas and carnitas, but I've had better flavor at Moes or Willys... and for much less.
I'm hoping MCG had a bad night, but it will be many more nights before we return.
Best Margaritas/Mexi food in Atlanta – I travel for work and eat Mexican several times a week all over the SE. When I want good fresh margaritas, not the sour mix kinds you get at most mexi joints, I go to Mexico City Gourmet. The good drink & cheap pitchers of beer; coupled with the great food and service is what keeps me coming back. Place is family owned and it shows in the food and attitude. You feel like you are in "Cheers" when you walk through the door. Some highlights are the Jumbo Texas margarita, Aztec Nachos, steak taco pablano, and the quesadilla especial. Lunch is cheap and same size portions as dinner, but even dinner won't break the bank. I would check it out if you are anywhere around Decatur or Emory.
Great Local Spot – I recently had dinner at MCG and loved it. This was my first time in. Mexico City was recommended to me by a friend who has lived in the neighborhood for years.she told me it has been in buisness for 26 years OMG!!! One bite from my Tacos al Pastor (pork and pineapple) and I was sold! The quality of food here is great(Guacamole is Super Fresh) and I will surley return.
P.S. the margaritas should not to be missed!
Awful, just really....AWFUL. – We decided to try Mexico City Gourmet because in one of their ads they mentioned that they were rated best of something-or-other in 2007. I love Mexican food, so even though we try not to eat out very often, we thought we'd go there for our saturday night out.
I am SO annoyed that we wasted our money at this place. They stuck us at a crappy table, and then proceeded to ignore us for about 10-15 minutes (we didn't even have glasses of water). The waiter finally showed up, took our drink orders and then it was at least another 5-8 minutes before those showed up, even though we were practically right next to the bar. The salsa and cheese dip both tasted like they had come out of a jar. The margarita was OK. I figured that the entree food would perhaps compensate for the lack-lusterness of everything else, but alas, my hopes were dashed! My chicken enchiladas with mole sauce were perhaps the most uninspired and bland meal of my entire life. Seriously- the chicken wasn't seasoned or anything, it was utterly devoid of flavor. My boyfriend ordered #17 and said it was at best, "just OK" and that it seemed as though all the flavor had been boiled out of it.
And all the while, we kept having to flag our waiter down, to get napkins, Texas Pete sauce (so I could doctor up my enchiladas to some semblance of flavor), etc. It was pretty much a terrible dining experience and I cannot fathom what any of the people who wrote this place good reviews see in it.
