Editorial Review for Sushi Avenue on Ponce – by Philip Malkus
The Scene
Looking more like a sunny Greek taverna than an austere Japanese sushi bar, this quirky, easygoing spot is popular with couples and families. In warm weather, there are a few tables outside for prime people watching. Despite some minor language barriers, servers are accommodating and expedient.
The Food
The menu divides itself between sushi and other traditional (cooked) Japanese dishes. Sushi rolls are pristinely fresh and creative. Try the multi-hued rainbow roll, the Super Eel Roll with exquisitely ripe avocado and refreshing cucumber; and the Decatur Roll with four varieties of fish. Tempura is executed with precision: A combination shrimp and vegetable tempura plate makes a great pre-sushi starter. Hijike (black seaweed) is surprisingly delicious. Teriyaki and udon/soba soups are competent, if less interesting than other choices. Regulars argue good-naturedly about which ice cream flavor is best for dessert: seductive lychee or delectable red bean wins our vote.

Sushi Avenue is a long time favorite. This little restaurant is hidden at the side of a building along east Ponce in downtown decatur. The restaurant is small, but the taste is big. The fish is very fresh and they even use real crab instead of krab.

We've been going to Sushi avenue almost as long as we've lived in Decatur (since 1999), and it's been consistently excellent the entire time. The staff is always friendly and helpful, the environment is pleasant but not too formal, and the prices are quite reasonable given the quality. It may be possible to find better sushi elsewhere in Atlanta, but I've never been able to. I'd have to say it compares quite favorably with what I've had in San Francisco and Tokyo.
