Editorial Review for SAGE on Sycamore – by Jane Garvey
The Scene
One of Decatur's fine old 19th century storefronts provides a rich context for this casual bistro. Old brick walls angle against large awning-shaded windows which look out onto the pedestrian street in front. After-work crowds of 20- and 30-somethings gather at the friendly bar for animated conversation. Service ranges from cheerful but unsophisticated to professional.
The Food
An eclectic New American menu includes everything from duck confit to a fried shrimp "po'boy." Appetizers, the better choice here, include a crisp quesadilla with marinated tomato garnish and sour cream and a garlic cheese soup, a regular special. A bouillabaisse of delectable shellfish in a saffron-scented fumet nonetheless disappoints by arriving barely tepid. Flank steak, a perfect medium rare, comes with stone-cold mashed potatoes. Pork tenderloin, ordered medium, instead arrives rare, but comes with a generous helping of tasty sweet potato hash. Try the vanilla creme brulee for dessert.

I live in the heart of Manhattan, with no shortage of fine dining, but I love Sage the most! Not too homey or fancy, Sage has the perfect ambience of a perfectly charming restaurant. It makes me very happy to come there straight off the plane and relax at the bar. The atmosphere is charming, the bar food is great and Roy is absolutely the best host ever. It's great to have a place away form home that I always know will be delightful. I just wish I could be there more often.
Pros: Great ambience, great food, fabulous service, great place to eat at the bar.
Cons: None
