The Scene
For a city that has been woefully short on contemporary design, Atlanta's modernists have scored big time with Space. Striving toward minimalism, the store gets an ethereal serenity from its glossy white floor, illuminated milk-glass walls, white ceiling and gauzy sheers sparkling with tiny mirrors. The stark setting makes the streamlined furniture and accessories even more striking, and its retro-style window displays are pure fun.
The Goods
Space fills up with the classics of 20th-century design like Barcelona chairs and Bertoia wire chairs, plus European contemporary furnishings by makers such as Minotti and I.M. Bross. These ultra-sophisticated designs may be beyond the beginner's budget. Accessories include milky white vessels, illuminated plastic panels and sleek, black leather boxes. But be careful--a stack of skinny, tufted orange-velvet cushions that looks chic in this setting can look like something out of your parents' basement when taken out of context.
