Overview – Once the spiritual centerpiece for the civil rights movement, the Heritage Sanctuary, a national historic landmark, is visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists each year. It was here that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was baptized at age 5, delivered his first sermon at 17 and later became senior pastor. Ebenezer's Cathedral, the redbrick structure built in 1922, has since been restored and renovated. It contains the original altar and pulpit furniture. Sunday services open to the public at 7:45am and 10:45am. Sanctuary visitation hours (may be closed to the public for special services) are Mon-Fri 9am-5pm and Sat 9am-2pm.
When to Go:
To get the full experience, visit the site on a Sunday and attend one of the services held in the Horizon Sanctuary. Then venture across the street to explore the historical attractions.
