Editorial Review for Gilbert's Mediterranean Cafe – by Michael Alvear

The Scene
This tiny Midtown cafe blends down-home warmth with a bohemian element native to the pedestrian-heavy corner of 10th and Piedmont. Inside, a sophisticated but raucously fun crowd drowns out the retro, international groove music.

The Food
This sleek contemporary bistro offers a mostly successful fusion of Mediterranean rim dishes. Borek (thin phyllo pastries) and a funky piyaz (a tangy bean salad) are solid variations on classic Istanbul dishes. The baba ghannouj is smoky with just the right amount of tahini. A deliciously tender chicken shish kebab, an entree, is heavily spiced, though not too much. Cilantro- and mango-encrusted trout on a bed of Indian basmati rice strikes a perfect balance between competing flavors. For dessert, baklava is filled with ground walnuts and soaked with honey, and would be perfect if it weren't paired with an out-of-place cherry syrup. Tiramisu is so light it practically floats off the plate.

5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended

Took an out of town guest to this place and she really enjoyed it. Service was prompt, professional and personable... no attitude or rushing. The food was great as I ordered the salmon, mushroom soup and a tiramisu martini. Everyone around us seemed to be enjoying their food as well. The ambiance is very eclectic but blends well with the area... nothing too gaudy or too cheapy. Looking for a neat little place with great food and a relaxing but fun atmosphere? This is it.

Pros: Great food, great service, laid-back atmosphere

Cons: A little pricey ($9 for a specialty martini), but worth it

The food was wonderful and the service was also very good. I think there was a birthday party of some sort going on at the bar while we were there but it wasn't distracting. I liked the level of lighting and all the members of my group seemed to enjoy their dishes as well. Even started a random conversation with the two guys next to us....they seemed to like their food too!

Pros: Food, location, atmosphere

Cons: A little small
