Editorial Review for Atlanta Grill – by Philip Malkus
The Scene
Art deco meets the French Quarter in the Atlanta Grill, housed in the downtown Ritz-Carlton. Vintage black-and-white photographs of the city commingle with tony booths and richly colored wall murals. The wrought-iron veranda, bedecked with flickering lanterns, is perfect for watching the crowds below on Peachtree Street.
The Food
On this menu of New Southern offerings, gems include a flavorful gumbo; a lively salad of blue cheese, spiced pecans and grapes; and a delicate striped bass paired with elegant fingerling potatoes. Stick with simpler entrees, like the free-range veal chop or filet mignon with bearnaise sauce. Waits between courses may be long, though a warm fruit crisp with sour cream ice cream brings the meal to a satisfying and delectable close.

I dropped in before an important meeting and ordered the cheeseburger. $17.00 is a little pricey, but the server said it was good. He was wrong. For that price, I want a very good burger. I won't be back. He also said the vodka was a "large pour" For $12.00. He was wrong again. It was a 2.5 oz pour, about the smallest you can get. Jack

A visiting friend from out of town staying at the Ritz Carlton treated us to dinner at this restaurant, a first time experience for all three in our party. Considering the reputation of the hotel, our expectations were that the restaurant would be of similar quality. The motif is lovely; the service was prompt and polite; the wine list was extensive; the food was dreadful. We had mussels in a salty bacon broth that were tiny and overcooked. Unfortunately, this was the only item we complained to the staff about. My stuffed raviolis were just boring; I make a better red sauce at home and I'm a terrible cook. The lobster was also overcooked and somehow watery. The other entree ordered was the lamb, which was mediocre. A very disappointing dining experience, considering the bill total. There are 100s of far better restaurants in Atlanta at similar or lower price. We won't be back. The Ritz should really be ashamed of itself.
