Dahlonega and NE Mountains

Editorial Review for Dahlonega and NE Mountains – by Florrie Burch and Justin Williams

Overview
The site of America's first major gold rush, Dahlonega continues to rake in the cash by playing up its glittering history and small-town charm. Reminders of the town's golden years are everywhere, but the most fun are the lovably cheesy roadside gold-panning stands, a must for families. Friendly mom-and-pop shops populate the town square, offering everything from Southern crafts to Southern food. Don't leave without buying a piece of mountain craft work--candles, woodworking and dolls all have a unique Georgia style.

The Appeal
Dahlonega rests at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, near some of the state's prettiest scenery. Drive a few miles north on Highway 60, and you enter Chattahoochee National Forest, which offers excellent hiking, camping, mountain biking and trout fishing. Springer Mountain, the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, is 20 miles away. For a day trip, head to spectacular Amicalola Falls, the highest waterfall east of the Mississippi.

I think the Georgia NE Mountians are always beautiful but this time of year they are more than beautiful!! If you just drive and do not get out of the car it is still a fun and worthwild trip! Also you should eat @ the Smith House in Dahloaga square, it is excellent!

this is a great excursion for young kids 6-12 years old. The gold mines are really exciting and we even panned for gold and found a nice size nugget. Searching for semi precious stones was also alot of fun

A great getaway for scenic vistas and rustic digs, plus a helping of touristy kitsch.  See the full editorial review.
