Located in the heart of VA Highlands is an adorable little gelato shop called Paolo's. Be sure to get the stracciatella & millefiori gelato flavors, they're both delicious!
Terrible service! – The server was so NASTY (read: unprofessional) that my niece who had never experienced Gelato still has not tasted what I think is the best dessert in the world. It would not hurt the business to let people try it.
A must see and do in the heart of VA Highlands – Excellent personality for what we normally see here in the states. Picture all the ice cream shops, smoothie places and desert places you've been too.
This is like none of them. It's really genius the way Paolo has brought entertainment and variety to this small shop.
The gelato is homemade and most of everything else is too. It's a little pricey, but I always make room for this after dinner in the neighborhood.
There is a great temptation to over indulge, but I just make it my goal to return again soon.
Mad Italian's Pistachio Gelato, Pure Heaven! – We've been regulars of Paolo's, for a very long time in the Highland's. Even in cold February, it's always a high-energy treat. Cannoloi's, Cups, or Waffle Cone's, it's just the best Gelato in the ATL. Personal favorite is Pistachio. Although Rum Raisin, is a close second. And all the Italian caffene is excellent. And to top it all off, the wild and crazy guy himself, Paolo! Oh, and try the unusual Flower Flavors, like Jasmine.
Great Cannolis, The Gelato is Nothing Special.......Where's the Seating – I love the cannoli's.....unbelievably good.
The gelato is just average and not worth the expensive pricetag. I know Paolo goes out of his way to "really sell the authentic italian feeling" (and it does sell), but why can't the quality of the gelato match that feeling?
Another issue is that there is no space, long lines, and very limited outdoor seating. On more than one occasion I wanted to have a cappucino with my cannoli, but it's tough to do while standing up!
One more thing, enough with the Food Network rerun in the front window. All of us know about it, and it gets old having to watch reruns of that schmoozfest with Al....
If Paolo would only spend a few bucks on seating and better quality gelato, then I could see being a regular here.
I know my opinion won't keep all the V-H neighbors from getting in line and singing the praises, because quite frankly, the truth hurts.
I'll take my cannoli to go....
This place is ROCK !! – Oh !! Man ~ What a Great Gelato !!
It's my first time to have the gelato & i just fall in love with it!!
Must try !! STRACIATELLA (like chocolate chip) Just so good !!
But don't just pick only one flavor coz' you can do up 2 four flavors.
Ask for samples, Staffs are very nice & extremely friendly.
Easily the best gelato in the city – Serving more than a few flavors of gelato, Paolo's in Virgina Highland is a great place to go after dinner for a sweet summer treat. Paolo's has been featured on The Food Network and has also been Zaggats rated, so you won't be taking a chance on a unknown with this one. Paolo's has the traditional gelato flavors as well as a line of soy based and flower flavored gelati. I had the nutella gelato and loved it. But, watch out because this is a cash only establishment and there isn't a lot of standing room in the shop. It is worth the crowd and the hassle of having to make sure you have cash. They also have dog gelato, so you can bring Fifi along for a tasty treat as well.
Not worth it – Gelato is average and service is horrible. Just ask for a sample and see how you are treated. I won't be back.
Excellent Itanian Ice – This has to be the best Gielato outside of Italy. It is not cheap, but it worth every penny, and you get what pay for in taste. You're in Virginia Highlands, and the atmosphere, the dining, the people, are what you visit for. It is the perfect way to end your evening, especially with summer approaching. You will see that many agree as the lines lengthen with the summer heat outside.
A wacky Highlands gelato shop specializes in over-the-top confectionary playfulness. – The Scene
Tiny, charming, and chock-full of whimsy, this instantly likeable gelato and sweets boutique stands out in a neighborhood full of eye-catching shops and restaurants. An enormous fiberglass ice cream cone stands watch by a popular bench outside. Inside, every inch of space is crammed with colorful displays of imported lollipops, chocolates, and premium Italian coffees. Service is friendly, and, if the owner Paolo gets involved, a bit crazy in the nicest possible way.
Paolo's menu includes gelato "art" (fanciful creations like "Eggs Sunny Side Up" made from gelato and confectionary), panini, and shelves full of crepes, cannolis, imported sweets and coffees. This wacky joint comes close to delivering sensory overload; ultimately it works best as a place to head for a simple cone after mealtime in the Highlands. Ask for a sugar cone with anything from mint chocolate chip or sour cherry to coffee or German chocolate.
Overpriced & Crowded – The store's location in the Highlands means that there is no space to sit and enjoy your gelato - that is if you can find a parking place. And although the gelato is good, the prices are too high for the little portions.
