The Scene
Inside, the decor includes an eight-seat counter, flat grill, refrigerator and television. "Don't allow babies to sit or stand on counter" and "Do not curse" are two of eight rules that 60-something Ann, a good-humored woman in a white apron, enforces. In this busy to-go business for three decades, Ann navigates a tiny space, hand-making patties and tending them on the grill.

The Food
If you're serious about burgers, head straight for the Ghetto burger, decadently slathered with onion, bacon, chili and cheese. The Hood burger features two lean cheeseburgers topped with bacon and coleslaw; order the combo for lemonade and fries. The chili dog split is two dogs deep-fried and slathered in chili on a white bun. The crinkle fries are nothing special, but the burgers and dogs are worth a trip.

This is my first review, and Tuesday was my first trip to Ann's Snack Bar. When I first heard about Ms. Ann's massive burgers, my first thought was, "Break out the Pepto." I honestly didn't think all that stuff piled on a mammoth burger would be good. I thought it would be overwhelmingly gross. No, no,no... The burger is just plain fabulous! I mean, yeah, it looks kind of like a train wreck and is about the size of a Little League catcher's mitt, but I'm telling you, it is SO tasty! I'm a big guy and I love a good burger, but I could only put away half of it. The same went for my friend. He could only manage half as well. Oh, I meant to tell you, the chili on the burgers is the bean-free, wonderful chili that has the same flavor as the chili on The Varsity's fabulous hot dogs! Just finely ground beef and just the right spices! Mmmmmm! The fries filled up a second plate. Everything is hot and fresh, hand prepared by Ms. Ann. You get your canned drink out of a drink refrigerator at the end of the counter. Napkins, salt, pepper and Ketchup are there on the counter. It's a very basic little place but from now on, I will call it "Burger Heaven!." Ms. Ann hand-crafts your burger before your eyes. She is truly a burger artist at work. But don't rush her, don't break in line or be ill-mannered or foul mouthed to ANY degree. I haven't witnessed Ms. Ann having to "discipline" anyone, but my friend has! We were both throwing around the yes Ma?ams, no Ma?ams, thank you Ma?ams and please, Ma?ams like they were salt!! That was a mighty big knife she was using to cut those mammoth burgers, and I didn't want to see it up close!! She was very sweet to us and we dropped a few bucks in the tip bowl as we were leaving. If you LOVE an excellent burger (and who doesn't), you MUST go to Ann's Snack Bar!! You need to experience this. It'll be worth the wait. And put something in that tip jar when you leave!!

Here's the skinny on this place: You don't go for the food. Really. You don't. The food was just so so. You can make a better burger yourself. You go for the experience, nothing else. If you aren't able to spend a few hours waiting, don't even think about it. She only seats 8 at a time, and then only once they are done do the next diners sit. Don't even try to come in the door if she's full. Miss Ann throws a lot of ATTITUDE, but oh what FUN! (Ask her what she thinks of Shirley Franklin). Puts me in mind of that famous mean "Soup Guy" on Seinfeld but instead of Soup, it's hamburgers. The food, honestly, is nothing special. It's diner food, properly cooked and served, but it's nothing to write home about. Rarely will you find someone there that has been there before. When you show up, remember who's in line in front of you, and who's in line behind you and respect that. Miss Ann will throw you out in a hot second if you break in line, or get out of order. Don't talk on the phone in her place. Be mindful of your manners. My whole experience was about 3.5 hours, from first walking in to leaving. I made some good friends while I waited on the patio, and the person who sat next to me. If I had to do it all over again, I honestly say that I wouldn't waste the time. She's a lovely lady, really. But not worth the wait.
