“Laid back, good food - a place you can feel comfortable going whatever you look like.”
“Unlike the "chef's right" dude, I like places with character; and I find the staff engaging, not a bunch of monkey trained nimrods that give answers to the questions they are trained to answer (aka, corporate, cookie cutter, no risk bars).”
“Good drinks and a great atmosphere.”
“The U Joint has my favorite lunch in town: mushroom swiss chicken sandwich with onion straws (you have to sub the burger for chicken.)”
“Good beer selection and full bar.”
“It is a great place to cap off a night.”
“great place to relax and people-watch, at least during the day.”
“great choice of potables and superior bar/pub grub (pay attention to the daily specials which are always great) all at reasonable prices.”
“All this makes up for sometimes slow service that happens even when it's not crowded.”
Some of the worst service in town--DON'T GO HERE!!. This is why I don't understand the Citysearch system. Mostly bad reviews and still has a 4 1/2 star rating? Anyway, I live spitting distance from the U-Joint and I hardly ever go there and when I do, it's because I'm feeling lazy and just want to walk to the nearest bar instead of driving. They have had in my opinion (and I have over ten years in the industry) some of the worst service in the city. Unless you sit at the bar, it could take you 30 mins. or more to get another drink. On top of that, the food generally stinks. Just like all of the places these guys own (Brake Pad, 97 Estoria, Flatiron, etc.) the food is about as interesting as any Taco Mac suburban hell hole you would find outside the city. Nice patio, but it's usually full of barking dogs and parents who think it's cool to take their kids with them while they get drunk. You don't have to take your kids or your dog everywhere people, especially a bar where I just want to relax. Not babysit your kids and listen to your dog bark everytime someone walks by. I love Oakhurst and Decatur, but the U-Joint stinks.
U-Joint- Expect the very worse service in the industry.. You would think this neighborhood joint would treat their regulars/locals with respect and with curtsey, but this is not the case. I will say, great atmosphere and halfway decent pub grub. But the wait staff goes out of their way to be rude, slack, and treat the customers as if they are an inconvenience. Having lived and worked in this community for 7+ years, I've always gone out of my way to support our n'hood businesses. Certainly not the U-Joint. Spending my hard earned money where I'm treated like I am not welcomed? I don't think so. I know I speak for many of my friends, neighbors and co-workers too. Their reputation has taken a nose dive in very recent months. I will say, Decatur is full of great pubs and restaurants with great service who respect their patrons. However, the Universal Joint definitely not one of them.. My advice; spend your time and money where you are appreciated-
This Joint is Rusty!. Once a great neighborhood bar, now a place of lousy food and extremely bad service. You see a new face at the bar or a new server and you think, "Let's give them another chance," but you WILL be disappointed. Very disappointed. Waitstaff and bartenders can't remember orders - consider yourself lucky to get everything you ordered the first time. They are moody and just plain rude. You wonder if they are intentionally going for a reputation of bad service. Perhaps it is all the shots and drinking employees do on the job that distracts them from what they should be doing. Entertain yourself by watching employees drink and then screw up your order. Better yet, do yourself a favor and stay away from this rusty "joint."
poor management. Like other reviewers, I really wanted to like this place. The atmosphere is nice, but after 3 bad expereinces, I have written off this place for good. The help seems a little indifferent and the management is just plain god awful. Don't expect a problem with the food or service to be handled in a caring manner or any manner at all for that matter. If I operated any of my businesses they way they operate this place, I would have been bankrupt years ago.
Good food... Good staff.... Great food as always. The trivia is fun too. Customer service has improved in the last couple of months as well.
Where the customer is NOT always right.... If you can stand the catty waitstaff and management and don't mind waiting for them to finish playing the bar top video game before they serve you, you might like the place. The waitstaff fills the bar seats once they are off, making the bar crowded. Food is average at best, not even close to what it was a few years ago. Every once in while I pop in to see if it has improved. The trick - pop in on a Tuesday for Trivia. It is the best trivia in town and actually makes the experience worthwhile. The patio is the place's best feature.
User review by caio555. Yummm-! Love U-joint! This bar is what all bars should be- Great food, cold beer, friendly, happy staff, easy-going. eclectic, diverse down to earth atmosphere, beautiful patio-, wonderful people, what more could you possibly want?
User review by pdat. Everytime I go to the Universal Joint I have an amzing experience. The food is always good and the staff is great. I love the new salmon burger and salmon salad!
Funky-friendly neighborhood joint wins with easygoing bar scene and worth-a-trip snacks and burgers..
The Scene
Located in sleepy Oakhurst, this quintessential neighborhood bar features glass garage doors that open onto a spacious patio with architectural gas-station remnants. It probably won't make any "Top-10 Hot Spots" lists, but if you're looking for a friendly, low-key joint, this is your place.
The Draw
Though it's better known as a bar, the Universal Joint sports a menu that's worth a trip on its own. Snacks, including creamy hummus, crispy onion straws and a Buffalo chicken quesadilla (served with a side of blue cheese dressing and celery), are miles better than your average bar chow. The same goes for top-notch, hefty burgers, from the basic Regular Ol' Burger to the satisfyingly messier bacon cheeseburger. A plate of fries, topped with jack cheese, bacon and ranch dressing, is worth a trip.
Old Standby. We moved here recently and came to UJoint each time we were in town searching for houses. We like the laid-back atmosphere (we tend to go for lunch on Saturdays), the mixed crowd and the burgers. A great place to relax and people-watch, at least during the day. All this makes up for sometimes slow service that happens even when it's not crowded...but we will return and we recommend!
