The Scene
Beat up but comfortable, this tiny bar and dining room is as much of a lounge as it is a burrito joint. Service is pure-bred slacker: You either get ignored in a friendly kind of way or you get ignored in a contemptuous kind of way. Late nights bring out the serious boozer element.
The Food
Don't come here expecting to find hard-core cantina fare. The tip-off is a note on the menu proclaiming: "Each burrito comes on a whole wheat lard-free tortilla." The menu offers significant options for vegetarians, vegans, and meat-eaters. Hefty burritos are better than the quesadillas, with top marks going to the chicken burrito, the green chili and potato and "The Breakfast." Wash it all down with a chilly pint of the Dayglo agave margarita madness.

Pretty much my favorite restaurant in Atlanta & cause it's so cheap I can afford to come back frequently. The food & drinks are consistently great. The only drawback is that it can be really crowded before a show at the Variety Playhouse (next door).

First off, let's just admit here and now that the food is on the, oh, pretty delicious side. You can't go wrong with a quesadilla, burrito, or massive soft taco. Seriously well flavored and stuffed with filling. I wish the chips were better, though. They usually taste like they came straight from a Tostitos bag--very dry and overly salty. My beef with El Myr is the service. They once told me that all the waitstaff waits on all the tables as a collective effort, which in theory seems like you'd recieve incredible service. How wrong. Inevitably, it takes forever to get your order, refills, silverware, etc. We usually have to grab menus ourselves then hope that someone stumbles by the table to drop off the cheese dip before it's congealed too badly.

I must say, El Myr does it right. Why go to a chain restaurant when you can go to El Myr and end up with a burrito that not only tastes better than those other guys, but can also count as two meals because of its monstrous size? Their food is very well-priced and I simply love the low-key, bar atmosphere. The patio offers additional seating, so it usually isn't an issue, unless you try and trek over there on a Friday or Saturday night. One last comment: if you plan on eating there and you know there is a show at the Variety Playhouse, either get there really early or you'll be hard-pressed to find any seating.
