Editorial Review for John Howell Park – by Steve Merrill
The People
The large residential areas surrounding John Howell Park keep it well stocked with fresh faces for volleyball, frisbee and people watching. You'll not find the teeming multitudes here--they're at Piedmont Park--but the spring and summer months witness a steady stream of activity.
The Recreation Factor
Eminently useable, this park includes one of the city's best small frisbee fields--there are no ankle-smashing divots--and a volleyball pit replete with sand and extra-tall referee chairs. An intricate jumble of tunnels, slides and ladders forms the children's playground. On the opposite side of the street, a soccer field is available for use on weekends.

When Im more interested in reading than socializing, I come here instead of Piedmont Park. Theres a volleyball court and childrens playground on one side of the park. But just on the other side is a quieter patch of grass that never gets crowded. Trees and bushes keep you from feeling exposed to Virginia Avenues traffic. If you're looking for even more quiet, try Lullwater.
