Centennial Olympic Park

Editorial Review for Centennial Olympic Park – by Steve Merrill and Ginger Massey

The Scene
A decorative mosaic of grass-green patches and geometric shapes composed in red brick, Centennial Olympic Park is positioned between competing skyscrapers. This well-kept green space is a welcome complement to its urban environs.

The Draw

The Quilt of Remembrance, a memorial to those killed by the 1996 Olympic bombing, is the most notable of the park's artistic adornments. Kids love the noontime entertainment--jets of water bursting from the five rings of an Olympic logo, moving to the rhythm of Neil Diamond's "Coming to America." Also during the summer, the park holds free concerts; John Cougar Mellencamp, Indigo Girls and Ray Charles are a few of the free acts that have performed in the past. Besides the occasional big-name show, the park also sponsors Wednesday "Wind Down" April through September and Friday "On the Bricks" concert series in the summer.
