Psychotically owned and operated. I agree, the food at the Bread Garden is outstanding, and I've always enjoyed decent service. However, the woman who owns and operates the place is, in my opinion, a basket case. If your service wasn't good, chances are your server was fed up with her neuroses.
Editorial Review. Italian-like breads abound at this Midtown bakery that supplies loaves to many local restaurants.
Bread Garden. It's too bad the other reviewer had such a negative experience. Mine was completely opposite. While Bread Garden is surely all about the food and there's not much emphasis on making it an irresistible place to hang out, I found the service to be friendly, efficient and helpful. To me its a breath of fresh air to find a place that prides itself in its product rather than its packaging. There are ARTISTS at work here! Too often I find I go to places where the atmosphere is wonderful, the service is overly friendly and the food is totally forgetable. Go to Bread Garden for amazing, authentic breads, outstanding pasteries and the best foccacia I ever tasted. Then take your goodies to your favorite place -- like your home, maybe? -- and enjoy. I also have to say that I was in recently and there was a young man working there who couldn't have been more delightful and helpful. I think he's a college student, possibly working a summer job. But the whole experience for me was entirely satisfying.
Horrid Customer Service.
Though the food at Bread Garden is great, the customer service is the worst. I have visited the bakery three times and each time is the same: the staff makes you feel unwelcome and uncomfortable; I am questioned about my order as if I am doing something wrong by buying from them; and I am given a long, long speech about how people don't respect how hard it is to run a bakery.
You may think that I have done something to provoke this behavior and, surely, you won't be treated this way. Believe me, I have done nothing but asked for a loaf of bread and how much for a chocolate chip cookie. I have really been too shocked by the service to say or do anything else. Ordering is apparently enough to set off the harangue. Buyer beware!
