Editorial Review for Chez Shea – by Hannah Levin
The Scene
Long beloved for its sweeping views of Elliot Bay and whisper-worthy perch above Pike Place Market, this European-flavored bistro underwent a graceful change in ownership in 2004. Regulars will be happy to see that much has remained the same, from the hushed atmosphere and crisp linens to the warm-hearted, detail-oriented service. It's easy to imagine that the dimly lit dining room has been the setting for more than a few marriage proposals.
The Food
Koichiro and Tomoyo Ikawa bring a broader stroke of Japanese influence to the kitchen's refined focus on seasonal, local ingredients. Courses from the fixed-price menu consistently arrive beautifully timed and elegantly presented. Starters might include fresh oysters with a brightly-flavored wasabi soy mignonette or an understated celery bisque with the sharp contrast of a blue cheese garnish. Entree choices may include a perfectly executed beef tenderloin with a rich demi-glace or expertly seared scallops in a port reduction sauce. Diners with room for dessert can't go wrong, particularly if they select the chevre cheesecake.

I have heard of Chez Shea for some time and was waiting for a special occasion to try it. Four of us went there for my birthday and tried the chef's tasting menu. We thought the food was well prepared and it was fun to try 8 different things. We were totally stuffed by the 5th dish and had a wonderful time. Our server was so kind and the place was not pretentious at all. Overall, it was expensvie about $500 for 4 people but worth the money and experience.

I'll start off by saying outright that Chez Shea was simply fantastic! * Outstanding service (our waitress gave us plenty of time to decide on dinner choices, and was alert enough to realize that when we started eating our bread we were probably hungry enough to order dinner - a really nice touch!). * Amazing food (I highly reccommend the beef tenderloin - it's so tender, it cuts like butter...a great piece of meat!) * Incredible ambience (great shades of red, candlelight, and a quiet, intimate atmosphere). I have found one of my favorite restaurants in the city. I'm looking forward to the summer menu!
Pros: Great service, amazing food
Cons: None I can think of - a truly great experience
