The arrival of fall in Atlanta means many things: cooler days, colorful trees, weekend football and plenty of grilled cheese and tomato soup. Paying homage to what is quite possibly the best comfort food combination EVER, several of Atlanta's best restaurants do bang-up, grilled cheese and tomato soup combos for the autumnal months. Brace yourself. (Photo: Grilled cheese and tomato soup courtesy of Three Sheets)

Three words: Applewood smoked cheddar. Although Three Sheets keeps the bread no-nonsense with buttered H&F sourdough, the addition of this unusual, smokey cheese is key. We love the creamy side of side of tomato bisque, but it's the sandwich that steals the show.
Bocado throws a little bit of awesome into its grilled cheese by using pimento cheese and adding poblano peppers, bacon and fried green tomatoes. The zesty remoulade takes it to another level. Its side of tomato bisque is served with a cheesy crouton and sherry. Boom.
The grilled cheese at JCT Kitchen takes the childhood special and upgrades it with adult-worthy sophistication. Super buttery semolina toast cases an ooey-gooey combination of cheeses and roasted tomatoes. The accompanying cup of soup is the perfect texture for dunking--not too thick, not too thin.
Every Thursday night, Souper Jenny stays open until 10pm for an entire evening devoted to the autumn comfort staple, the grilled cheese. Expect a variety of grilled cheese and soup options (it IS a soup spot, after all). Or if you're lucky, find the restaurant's famous grilled cheese aboard its roaming food truck.
We tend to recommend Ormsby's as a great spot for beer drinking and retro gaming, and it just so happens that the best thing on the dinner menu is a sandwich called the Madison. Enjoy the sandwich made on grilled country sourdough with Swiss and cheddar cheeses, tomatoes and bacon. It's the one grilled cheese on our list that doesn't come with soup, but that's OK--it's just fine on its own.
